The Stephen Ministry

We live in a fast-paced and fragmented world. People suffer crises and tragedies, but they often don't have support they can count on. Family members and friends may be scattered across the continent _ or even the world. Neighborhoods rarely offer the support they once did. So when a crisis or challenge hits, many people have no one to turn to and end up facing it alone.

Congregations today are overwhelmed with needs for care —

At some points in life, everyone faces periods of crisis, transition, or difficulty. During these times people can receive great benefit from a caring relationship with someone who will faithfully listen, empathize, pray with and for them, and encourage them with Christ's love and care.

With Stephen Ministry, people no longer have to go through crises and difficulties alone. Instead they have a Stephen Minister - a Christian friend with a caring heart and appropriate training who will walk alongside them for as long as necessary, providing the emotional support and spiritual care they need.

The clergy will continue to offer primary care at St. Paul's, especially at the onset of a crisis. The Stephen Ministry will provide ongoing follow-up care under my direction. In this way, we will ensure to the best of our abilities that those who need care will receive it.

This past week Anne Refermat, Judy Carpenter, and myself attended a 50-hour training program. This will enable us to train others in the Stephen Ministry for St. Paul's. Please keep us in your prayers as we move forward in this exciting ministry.

The Reverend Thomas McCart,
Associate Rector

Kenyon College Choir — March 11
Lodging Needed

The Kenyon College Chamber Singers will be coming to Rochester for a concert at St. Paul's on Thursday evening, March 11. This wonderful choir from Ohio has been at our church before and this will mark their second appearance here. There is a need to provide lodging for these students and their director and his wife. If you are able to provide overnight accommodation for one or two of these students on March 11, with a breakfast on March 12, please contact Gail Bush at 377-5129. We are looking forward to their program and hope that you will be able to assist us with lodging.

Day Care Happenings

When I started working in the field of child care (too many years ago to count) a wise mentor told me that success in child care is measured one day after the next. She warned that, when we are doing our job well, there are no striking ups or downs—just problem-solving and enjoying each new day. As I reflect on 2003, I see that one day after the next, the year was calmly successful. Cumulatively, we have several successes to celebrate...

Each of these milestones is, indeed, accomplished by working together one day after the next. And, in reality, these are not the most important goals. Smiling into an infant's eyes, responding to a child's cry, supporting a preschooler's early efforts to write, simply bending over to tie a shoe—these are the critical tasks we carry out each day—with love and care throughout the day. And, we'll continue to do these things as we roll into 2004.

Thank you, St. Paul's Church Community, for supporting these efforts—one day after the next.
