Dear Friends and Members of St. Paul's,

At our Annual Meeting on January 25, we honored Dr. Molly Coulter and Mr. Jim Talpey for their Vestry service to St. Paul's.

Molly has served six years on the Vestry. With her many years of caring and healing children as a pediatrician, Molly brings that same passion to the Vestry for the youth of our parish. She has likewise been passionate about our important mission work that includes both our financial and people resources to be the hands and feet of Christ out in the world. She has been a Vestry liaison to Parish Life, Episcopal Church Women, Day Care, Antiques Show, and most recently, the long-range Strategic Planning Committee.

I could always count on Molly to ask the penetrating question on a different issue facing the Vestry. To every meeting, she brought her faith, her keen intellect and enormous energy and caring to support the mission of St. Paul's.

Jim Talpey has served three years on the Vestry. Jim was like fresh spring water, trying to clarify the sometimes-murky waters of difficult decisions. He has a solid, logical mind that helped connect our finances to our mission. Jim was the Vestry liaison to our Stewardship Committee, helping to communicate the mission priorities for the coming year.

Most of all, Jim has a love for St. Paul's that comes through his steadfast faithfulness and love of God in Christ.

Thanks be to God for Molly and Jim as Vestry leaders of St. Paul's and servants of God.

Faithfully yours,

The Reverend Frederic Reynolds,Rector

Stephen Ministry

The heart of a congregation's ministry is caring for people in need. Clergy and congregations exhaust themselves trying to meet these needs, but their best efforts often fall short for a number of reasons:

Concerned parishioners want to help, but they feel untrained and unprepared; they fear they will say or do the wrong thing, so they simply avoid the hurting person.

What can churches do to meet the ever-growing needs for care surrounding them? Involving well-chosen, trained, and supervised lay people is a natural, highly effective, and thoroughly biblical way to meet the growing need for care in congregations today. The Stephen Ministry provides congregations with the plan and resources to organize, train, and guide lay persons to provide consistent, quality, one-to-one Christian care to those who need it.

With Stephen Ministry, people no longer have to go through crises and difficulties alone. Instead they have a Stephen Minister - a Christian friend with a caring heart and Stephen Ministry training who will walk alongside them for as long as necessary, providing the emotional support and spiritual care they need, enhancing the care provided by clergy.

In January, Judy Carpenter, Anne Refermat and I received 50 hours of Stephen Ministry training, in preparation for training Stephen Ministers here at St. Paul's. Continue to keep us and this ministry in your prayers.

Thomas McCart, Associate Rector

What should the issues be in this election?

A national election is upon us. Each candidate attempts to couch electoral debate in terms favorable to him or her. And in the process avoids or obscures important issues to aid his or her cause.

To help St. Paul's members prayerfully consider the issues... a Forum!

in a supportive environment,

State your case, Sunday, February 29, after the 10:00 a.m. service.

Do you have an opinion?

Memorial Scholarships

St. Paul's offers two scholarships to help provide financial assistance for the continuing education of students in the parish. They are the Almus and Merriel Thorp Lay Theological Scholarship and the St. Paul's Memorial Scholarship.

Grants from the Merriel and Almus Thorp Lay Theological Scholarship Fund are made to Episcopalians living in the Diocese of Rochester. They are to develop knowledge and skills by which they may increase and deepen their ministry in the Diocese of Rochester. The fund is generally able to award one grant per year. Grants will not exceed $1,000. The administrators of the Fund normally consider grant applications quarterly, in January, April, July and October.

St Paul's War Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Vestry resolution December 8, 1948 to honor men and women of the parish who served in the World Wars, and now provides scholarships for students pursuing a College or Theological degree. The total amount for grants is limited by the income produced by the fund. The maximum grant available is $1000.00. Applications are due in the church office by April 15. If you are interested in either of these grants, application forms can be found in the Sunday Office or Wainwright Hall (271-2240). They are also available for download here.

The REAPers

2nd and 4th Thursdays, 10:00-11:45 a.m. in Wainwright Hall Parlor

The REAPers read, enjoy, and participate in discussing literature. The text for spring is Listening for God Volume 3, a collection of short stories by contemporary authors (available at the Good Book Store). These stories with videotaped comments by the authors help to stimulate discussions about life and faith. Following each meeting, participants who are interested enjoy lunch together at an area restaurant. The REAPers invite all for a rich harvest of ideas and camaraderie.

Due to the fact that St. Paul's is in the process of assessing our Outreach needs, we are not able to accept donations of clothing and furniture at this time. Please do not bring these items to the church! We'll let the parish know when we'll be able to collect items again.
