Water for Sudan Update

Dear Members & Friends of St. Pauls:

I write this as I prepare for my conference in Canterbury, England. My Urban-Suburban Clergy group has plans to meet with the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, as well as with two bishops who are on the 2008 Lambeth planning team. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we will be meeting with Archbishop Rowan Williams as we had several years ago. I will be most interested to hear what these bishops have to say about our Episcopal Church and our continuing desire to be part of the greater Anglican communion, while honoring our autonomy and prophetic ministry for and with our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters. I have said this many times: We are a great Church. We recognize and try to live into the Christian faith that love and justice are two sides of the same coin. We are very much a part of God's doing "a new thing" with our Church. We are living as Easter people in the midst of threats and reprisals. And through God's blessing, we continue to grow both in body and spirit. May the power of the risen Christ be with you always.

~ The Rev. Frederic W. Reynolds, Rector

Agnus Dei - A Work in Progress

The late Francis Speer, a member of Altar Guild and long-time parishioner, created a watercolor with the express purpose of having it transferred to canvas where it could be worked as a tapestry to hang in the Sanctuary over the stairwell leading to the Columbarium. The watercolor is now in the Parlor of Wainwright Hall.

The stitchers are Gail Bush, Gwen Cheney, Joan Flint, Jean French, Susan Hyde, Carol Panzer, and Nancy Wolcott.

A Work in Progress

The tapestry pieces were on display in the Parish Hall Sunday, April 15, at the Altar Guild Enhanced Coffee Hour. Please continue to offer your encouragement to the stitchers as they complete this particular ministry.

From the Church School

On Sunday, April 22, students processed with a paper chain created by the congregation during Lent. Each link represents a one dollar contribution to the project "Hope of Sudan" founded by parishioners Ann Marie and Jerry DeLuccio. This organization supports education and counseling for Rochester's Young Men of Sudan. The special service that morning celebrated St. Paul's links with our Sudanese friends.

Flowers are scheduled to bloom for the Spring Breakfast. Enjoy a buffet breakfast served between services on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 13. Take home a decorated pot and posy to brighten your day!

(One-to-one Ministry by a Trained, Caring Friend)

Stephen Ministers care for St. Paul's parishioners facing challenges in life: loss of a loved one, divorce, a chronic illness, unemployment, aging and many more. Until now we have been using the term Care Receiver for the person we are seeing. Many of our "Care Receivers" and many of us, too, thought we could come up with a better descriptive for them. So, in consultation with the Clergy, we have decided that "Christian Friend" better describes the relationship and that is the term we will be using as the Stephen Ministry program moves forward. We ask your prayers for our Stephen Ministers and for their Christian Friends.

Water for Sudan

Salva Dut

It is with deep gratitude to our donors that we begin this Water for Sudan update. Following the most successful fall fundraising campaign to date for Water for Sudan, Salva Dut left for Africa on December 29, 2006. With high hopes of completing 15 water wells during the 2007 season, Salva set out to purchase the equipment needed for the wells and to hire his crew. Remember, now that Water for Sudan has its own drilling rig, we no longer need to rely on outside contractors. Some things happened quickly, such as finding an engineer, who Salva refers to as a "great mechanic" and purchasing supplies, such as hundreds of bags of cement, pipes, rods, hand pumps and even an additional 10-year-old truck and an all-terrain motorcycle. Locating a compressor did not happen as quickly. But this, too, was finally accomplished. You might wonder why we don't just have equipment shipped from the U.S. The most basic reason is that the cost is prohibitive. To date, 5 wells have been completed this season, with about two months left to drill.

Special News:

Salva has been named "Humanitarian of the Year" by the United Nations Association of Rochester. This is a special honor in recognition of his service to his brothers and sisters in Sudan.

We are happy to announce a wonderful fundraising event: Magic, Music, Mystery and Art, which will combine an evening of diverse musical offerings with an art sale, all to benefit Water for Sudan. On Friday, May 11 at 7 p.m., the doors will open at the Baptist Temple, 1101 Clover St. and the fun will begin: vaudeville, mime and comedy by Flash in the Pan, Broadway favorites, inspiring Renaissance choral music by Musica Spei (Music of Hope), jazz tunes by vocal trio Luminescence, Mitzi Collins, and much more! This all takes place during a show of beautiful oil paintings by noted local artist Lynette Blake. Ms. Blake will donate 25% of all sales made that evening to Water for Sudan. Admission is $10 in advance, or $15 at the door. Seating is limited, so call early to place your credit card order at 585-385-4457.

You may browse the paintings on-line at www.LynetteBlake.com. There is a special way that those of you who live far from Rochester and may not be able to join us can participate and help Water for Sudan. Call 585-739-5061 anytime after noon on May 11 to make arrangements for a purchase. Ms. Blake will ship your painting to you. (Note that all purchases are guaranteed; if you are not completely happy with your painting, the purchase price is fully refundable.)

As always, thank you for your support for Water for Sudan's vital mission. We hope to see you on May 11!
