St. Paul's Episcopal Church 1827-2002

Our 175th Year of Ministry

St. Paul's Episcopal Church has a story going back to these beginnings in 1827. During 2002, as we observed the 175th anniversary of this parish, we celebrated this story.

Rochester in the early 1800's was "still just a big clearing in the forest," yet the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 sparked a sevenfold growth in the population of Rochester over the next decade. One immediate result was a decision by the leaders of St. Luke's Church on the west side of the Genesee River to propose the establishment of a second parish on the east side. When St. Paul's was established in 1827, it was the first instance in the state outside of New York City where two Episcopal Churches were located in the same community.
